The 8 rules of salary negotiation
- Never give the first number. Let them anchor — then counter above it.
- Anchor 8–18% above the offer. You land in the middle; make the middle your target.
- Negotiate the package, not just base. Signing bonus, equity, PTO, remote days, and review timing are all levers.
- Use precise numbers. Asking for $127,500 signals research; $130,000 sounds like a guess.
- Silence is leverage. Make your ask, then stop talking.
- Get competing offers. Nothing moves a number faster than an alternative.
- Stay warm and collaborative. You are solving a problem together, not fighting.
- Get the final offer in writing before you resign anywhere.
